Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y., September 2018
A shining sun and beaming smiles ultimately prevailed through a dreary Saturday morning as Canon’s Clean Earth Crew—a team of more than 160 Canon Americas Headquarters employees and their families and friends—tackled a day of painting, planting, and weeding at Lake Ronkonkoma County Park.
Over the course of 22 years, Canon employees have volunteered thousands of hours to clean and beautify public spaces. This is what the Canon team is all about.
Groups ventured out into the park, some to pick weeds from the handball courts, others to spread mulch and plant flowers around the flagpole that greets all the park’s visitors, and many to paint a sprawling and aged black fence that encloses the Judge James J. Malloy Memorial Playground. Team members also dug holes along the fence of the handball court and soon filled them with a stretch of decorative bushes.
The dozens of children in attendance were tasked with putting their own unique stamp on each of the nearly 100 stones that now make up the park’s new rock garden. They also painted larger rocks and several trash barrels that are scattered throughout the 223-acre park, which surrounds what is Long Island’s largest lake.
Each of the children, who are eligible to receive a community service certificate for their effort, went home with one of many colorful kites handed out by event coordinators.
